Culture

Argentina’s cultural diversity is the result of its early indigenous population, mass immigration from Europe in the 19th century and its colourful history. The country’s cultural offering – art, literature, film, theatre, music, dance and also sport and cuisine - is intense and varied. In turn, the Argentine people are naturally extremely open, friendly and hospitable.

There are a handful of cultural traits unique to Argentina that merit further comment:

Tango
The most well known of Argentina’s cultural art forms was born in the brothels of Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. Its melodrama and poetic sentiment are still very much alive today. Tango is heard and danced everywhere.

Asado
Argentines consume more beef per year than any other nationality in the world. The first time you are invited to an asado (Argentine barbeque) you will see why. An asado is not just a meal, it is a celebration of meat. Asados can last for entire day. They are an important part of the national culture and social life.

“Mate”
Mate is a tea-like infusion, characteristic of Argentina. The mate ritual is traditionally associated with gauchos but nowadays many Argentines drink mate on a daily basis, as an alternative to coffee or tea. You drink it hot, through a metal straw, out of a small round container. It contains antioxidants and caffeine. Mate is a social drink and the same recipient and straw are passed between friends and strangers alike.

Football
Even though football plays a part in many global cultures, in Argentina football is a passion that runs through the population’s veins. It is a life style and a way of looking at the world.
