Useful info
In 1965 Argentina’s national rugby team toured Southern Rhodesia and South Africa, where they won 11 of the 16 matches played and on 19th June, rose to historic victory at Ellis Park stadium beating the Junior Springboks by 11 to 6. During this tour, the South African press named the team, “the Pumas”, because of the jaguar in the coat of arms on the team blazer.
Today, rugby in Argentina is a sport in full growth. Following the Pumas’ excellent performance in the 2007 World Cup in France, when they came third, Argentina has become one of the world’s strongest sides.
This year, Argentina is hosting the Junior World Rugby Championship. Matches will be played in June in the cities of Rosario, Santa Fé and Paraná.
Attending a Pumas or a classic Top 14 Buenos Aires Rugby Union match is a unique and adrenaline-filled experience. These games draw large crowds of passionate rugby supporters.
Rugby is played all over the country. Cities such as Córdoba, Salta, Tucumán, Rosario, Bariloche and Mendoza are great destinations for combining rugby with tourism. Their teams participate in local tournaments and they also boast spectacular scenery.
