The sophisticated Avenida Alvear, in the Recoleta district of Buenos Aires, is home to luxurious clothing, jewellery and furniture brands. Patio Bullrich is Argentina’s most stylish shopping centre and is located just steps from Recoleta’s smartest hotels.
Leather shops can be found along Florida, the busy pedestrian street in the central Buenos Aires. Here, Galerías Pacífico shopping centre is worth a visit, not just for its excellent selection of shops but also for its mural covered, 450m² dome ceiling.
For the more avant-garde, Palermo Soho with its boutiques and design ateliers is the heart of creative Buenos Aires. This area has been transformed over the last ten years into “the” fashionable shopping spot. In Palermo you can find one-off items of clothing, accessories, art, designer furniture and original gifts.
San Telmo is the Buenos Aires antiques district and on Sundays there is a busy antiques market in Plaza Dorrego.
In the Andean North you will see brightly-coloured materials and carpets for sale that have been hand woven and dyed by the different indigenous communities. In Patagonia craftspeople are famous for their wood work, ceramics and semi-precious stones. In the Pampas, leather and silver items make ideal souvenirs for this land of gauchos and horses.
